Grade 1's focused on analogue clocks first as this is the easiest to learn to tell time.

First, we learnt about the hands of a clock, "o'clock" and thereafter, "half past" and for learners and thereafter included counting in 5's for telling the time every five minutes eg five past ten.

Learning in Grade 1 is an interactive and “hands on” process . Carefully thought out activities give learners the opportunity to engage both their minds and bodies. Working with concrete objects allows for better understanding of abstract concepts, thus building a solid foundation on which to build further.

The simple joy that children experience in building puzzles actually has incredible educational benefits. From enhancing problem solving skills to building eye hand coordination and memory skills, working with puzzles is an integral part of every grade 1 class.

The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially through handwashing with soap. Learners joined hands on  #GlobalHandwashingDay to advocate "Hand Hygiene for All"

Grade 1’s engaged in many activities during the short time at school. The learners were engaged in box building with anti-waste. Their imaginations led them to build amazing artwork. Working with fractions were fun as they learnt to share in half and quarters. Heritage day was informative as the kids learnt about our country South Africa and the different cultures.

When I first accepted the challenge to a full day of online learning , I had an overwhelming sense of sadness.

I was flooded with images of onsite classrooms under "normal" circumstances. I had flashbacks of kids rotating through fun learning stations, playing games together, reading in small groups, doing hands-on projects, and getting imaginative with their learning. For an instant, I felt like those days were over.

Grade 1: Spring/Lemonande Day

 On the 1st of September 2020 the Grade 1 learners at AFC “Sprung into Spring” in style! They sipped lemonade, enjoyed treats and had a picnic outside, all in accordance to the covid protocols.
