What a Topsy Turvy Year!
In keeping with the new normal and following Covid regulations our Al Falaah College Preschool held a creative and most definitely trend setting drive by graduation on Saturday, 5 December 2020.
JOINING AL FALAAH COLLEGE IN THE COVID ERA
Alhamdullilah with the grace of the Almighty, I joined Al Falaah College in October this year. Being in the teaching field for many years now, one would expect the transition to be smooth sailing. However, as I reflect on the weeks gone by, an apt quote comes to mind:-
As we were all thrown into the deep end, and had to find an innovative way in which to live, that never stopped us from having fun! Here, at Al Falaah College, we have an amazing sports department who never fail to amaze us. Our kids still manage to safely have a fun filled PE session whilst ensuring that we comply with COVID - 19 regulations by maintaining social distance.
Sensory play
Sensory play is the most therapeutic and enjoyable form of learning. Learner's refine their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills. Most importantly their five senses: Touch, hearing, sight, taste and smell. All of this takes place unconsciously whilst having utmost fun. If any of the Preschoolers are asked about their favourite time of the day: Sensopathic play wins all the way!
Covid Classroom
Families around the world are adapting to the evolving changes in daily lives caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. We, at AFC, have left no stone unturned in creating a safe environment for both learners and teachers. Social distancing is maintained throughout the day. Our desks have had screens installed and little footsteps painted outside our classes to protect our kids. We have ensured that our children adapt easily by using creative icons, e.g. ‘Miss Sparkly Clean’ for the sanitizer and ‘Mr. Beep Beep’ for the thermometer. Mr. and Mrs. Touch Me Not cards have been placed strategically as constant reminders. Tables, books, chairs and activities are sanitized daily by our assistants. Our Preschoolers have learnt how to stay in their ‘bubble’ space through the “Bubble” story concept which explains to kids in a fun and innovative way of how to keep safe.
Curriculum activities are the planned lessons and content that learners are taught to enhance their knowledge, personal growth and learning. Our weekly themes are packed with a variety of fun filled activities. Learning through play is an important part of a child’s learning and development. Our content includes literacy (letters), maths (numbers), art (drawing, colouring, cutting, gluing, painting), physical development (P.E lessons, jungle gym and movement), social development (taking turns, co-operation), language development (theme discussions, speaking and listening skills), and daily stories (books, flashcards, puppets and creative story telling).
Our Grade 00 learners at Al Falaah College Preschool were introduced to the "new normal" method of learning via online lessons. Learners showed enthusiasm and eagerness each day to learn through play.
Alhamdulillah, our Grade R Online learners adapted really well to the digital world of learning. They enjoyed the same activities as the Onsite learners and they worked at the same pace.
"Not a dry eye in the 'house' – Al Falaah College staff expected the day to bring a tremendous amount of joy to their preschool learners but underestimated the amount of joy it brought to the teachers and extended staff!
On Monday, 20 July parents were invited to the school driveway to receive a fun-pack from their childrens’ form teachers. Learners came along holding posters out of their car windows to spread the love.
